OCTGN (pronounced Octagon) is short for: Online Card and Tabletop Games Network.

With OCTGN, you can play any cardgame you want. On installation, OCTGN comes with a standard deck of cards, but you can add any cards you wish to it. Cardpatches or Sets aren't hosted on cardfloppers.com. If you want to have a certain cardpatch (set), ask around if someone can link you to one of the fansites.

Installation Steps:

1. Download and Install
OCTGN Base Setup 1.3.529 (~5MB)

Note:
----If you are running Windows 98/ME, you probably need to install you need to install the latest Microsoft Jet update for Windows 98 as well.
----If you are on XP and crashing for no apparent reason when running OCTGN, try to install the latest Microsoft Jet update for Windows XP.

Run OCTGN for the first time and select the "empty.mdb" file, click "Open", and make sure the program loads properly.

2. Download & Unzip the WOW Card Set Database:

Put these files to a temporary folder, there should be a .txt file and a folder named LargeJPG. The .txt file must be one level above the LargeJPG folder, it cannot be in the LargeJPG folder, nor can you move it somewhere else!

In OCTGN, click Game, highlight Database, then click "Load New Cards"

Browse to the location of the HOA.txt file, to load the cards. You should receive a confirmation that the cards have been loaded.

Now, you are all set. Read on, to find out how to use OCTGN to import, create, and play with your decks online.

Basic Setup & Customization:

Set your nickname:
Click the "Game" Button, highlight "More Options".
Choose "Change Name" Set your name as desired and click OK

Set Options:
Click the "Game" Button, then Options.
Set Life Total: You can click the +/- buttons next to your life total. That's the "20" you see by your name. Set your life total to your Hero's life total.

Set Card Options:
Click the "Game" button, highlight "Card Options".
Make sure that "Show your card text" and "Show other's card text", and "Show your facedown cards" are all checked!

You're almost ready to play the WoW TCG online with other OCTGN users!

Follow the steps below to import them into OCTGN.

In the main OCTGN window, click Deck Editor.
The Deck Editor window will appear.
Click Import.
Browse to the location where saved your deck .xml file.
Select the deck you want to load and click "Open"
You should receive the message: "Deck Added Succesfully..."

Loading a Deck for Play:
Once you have a deck imported into OCTGN, you need to load it for use in play:
In the Deck Editor window, click the name of the deck you want to use then click "Load"
You will be taken back to the OCTGN window and you deck count should now display the proper number of cards.

Find someone to play agianst:
Currently there isnt' a great way to find someone to play with online. Use these resouces until a better approach is found.

TIPS & TRICKS to making this work.

1. You'll need to bring your hero card out of your library before the game starts.

2. Second you'll need to decide whether to host or connect. If you have a firewall and have already configured it to host with Apprentice, then you would also be able to host games on OCTGN. Basically Open up the ports you set (1001) by default. Of course, you'll also need to have configured port forwarding on your router for it to work. Please see your router's support page for instructions. This is sometimes called "Virtual Server".

3. Use Ventrillo or some other voice software. It's much easier then typing.

Here is a quick reference list on how to use OCTGN to perform WoW TCG actions.

Common Actions:

* To start a new game: Both players should Right-click on their name in the main window, and choose "Reset"
* To shuffle: Right-click on your Deck, and select Randomize, or CTRL-S
* To roll a die or flip a coin: Click the appropriate button or ALT-R
* To draw a card: double click the deck or press CTRL-D
* To draw a card from the bottom: right click on the deck and choose "Draw from Bottom"
* To mulligan:Hold SHIFT to drag the the cards from your hand area to the bottom of the library, then draw seven new cards.
* To play a card face down: Hold the Shift key and drag the name of the card from your hand list to the play area
* To play a card face up: Drag the name of the card from the hand list to the play area
* To flip a card: Right-click on it and select "Face Down/Up" or hold the mouse pointer over it and press F6
* To exhaust or activate a card: double-click it.
* To place a card on the bottom of the deck: Hold Shift and drag to the deck.
* To view your graveyard: double-click it and then click OK. The number defaults to the total number of cards.
* To move a card from graveyard to hand: View the graveyard pile, then select the card you want to retrieve, drag it to the table top to reveal it to your opponent, then drag it to hand.
* To change your endurance total: Click the + or - buttons, or right-click on the number to set it manually
* Important Note: Due to a play difference between the Magic rules and the WoW TCG rules, if you play a face down card and then move it back to your hand, the name of the card will be revealed in the chat window. If you mis-play a face down card, it is recommended you inform your opponent and then simply drag it to a temporary location away from the main play area until you are ready to play and reveal that card.


Advanced Actions:

* Looking through your deck: Right-click on your deck and select "Show".
--To search your entire deck: click OK to select the default (every card) after using the "Show" function. Select the card you want and click drag it to the table, then to your hand.(Clicking Draw doesn't reveal the card to your opponent)
--To look at the top 1 or 2 cards in your library: change the number of cards you want to view to the appropriate number. Click "Close" when you are done.
* To reveal the top card of your deck: Right-click on your Library and select "Top card of deck face up"
* To set a counter: Right-click on the card and choose "Set Counter"
* To declare an attack:Click the character cards you want to attack and hit SHIFT-F3, this will place a red border around the cards to mark them as attackers.
* To use an effect or power: Click the card you want to activate and press F5, this will place a green border around the card.
* To specify the target(s) of an effect/attack: Click the target card and press F7. This will place a white border around the card.

Connecting via the Internet:

This is usually the most difficult thing for most people to do. First you need to decide whether to host or connect. If you have a firewall and have already configured it to host with Apprentice, then you would also be able to host games on OCTGN.

To setup as a host:

1. Click the "Game" button, choose "Serve"
2. A box will appear with 3 options
--IP Address: This does not normally need to be changed, leave it blank
--Port: This can be any number from 1-65535. We recommend using the default 1001, or 4747 if you have already configured your router for Apprentice.
--Password: You may specify a password so that only a specific person can connect. Usually left blank
3. Click "OK" and you should see the "Serving <IP#>" message appear in the chat window.
Note: If you are using a router, the IP that shows up in OCTGN is not the IP that you give to your opponent. You need to determine your local IP. An easy way to do this is via www.whatismyip.com

Of course, you'll also need to have configured port forwarding on your router for it to work. Please see your router's support page for instructions. This is sometimes called "Virtual Server".

To connect to another user:

1. Click the "Game" button, choose "Connect"
2. Enter the host's IP, port, and password(if necessary)
3. Click "OK" and you should connect.

Information about changing the virtual resolution:

OCTGN requires that both players be using the same "virtual resolution" which is the size of the virtual tabletop. The setting is determined by whoever is hosting, and the person connecting to the host will need to change the setting in order to connect. OCTGN will give you an error message telling you the resolution you need to use.

This setting is in "Game"->Options, Virtual Resolution. I find that 1280 is about the right size for a 2 player game.
